Have you ever experienced something that has sparked a flame of inspiration and hope inside your tight belly, making you want to run home and fish for paper and paints, your neglected journal, or put on instrumentals and dim lighting to catalyse self-reflection— the film on Dries Von Noten made me feel like that.

Im not entirely sure if it was the grecian golden interiors of The Capitol Theatre or the artisanal coffee stall outside of it that set the mood for me even before the film began, but I was quite excited to spend my Friday night amidst of the fashion and design industry of Singapore.

The ninety minute film on the private Belgian designer served as an intimate insight into the workings of his mind, creativity and life. Covering the step-by-step process behind his collections, the film gradually revealed him as the master of eclectic synthesis, bringing together seemingly opposed elements into his designs and runway shows. His meticulous and perfectionist’s obsession with detail stuck as a theme throughout, from the way he selected fabric in his studio, to taming his flowers in his home garden in Antwerp.

He said,“The word ‘fashion’ I don’t like. I would like to find a word which is more timeless.” These words resonated with me as I made a mental note of how the vast responsibility of this three trillion dollar industry on the environment and thousands of livelihoods, has been trivialised over time into a fleeting opportunity to wear and discard an outfit after getting the perfect snap for Instagram. My desire to propagate slow fashion by working for a sustainable label is growing stronger with every experience, story and quote.

Stay tuned. Stay inspired.
