The start of a work-life balance

Come to think about it, I’ve gone on a mini-holiday every semester this year and each one has left me feeling immensely fulfilled and satisfied. Be it Bhutan during my term break or Bali, Guangzhou and Dubai bang in the middle of my submissions, travelling is something that feeds my soul and happiness and trumps most other things- even due dates. This term I went to Dubai which was a week before my final submission and when I told my friends about the plan they looked at me like I was crazy. But the thing is, I didn’t want to miss this impromptu family holiday and neither did I want to be in a position where I would be perpetually stressing about my work while staring at the Burj. I wanted to eat the cake and have it too and that’s exactly what I did. One of the perks of living alone is managing your time exactly the way you want to and this has transformed my work ethic completely. Previously I was the type of student who would procrastinate all the way to a day before the submission and then pull an all-nighter and get the work done. I would get my grades, sure, but the process was tiring, and would leave me feeling silly. This past year, I have learned to prioritise my tasks and reward myself on its completion creating a healthy balance in my schedule. So during the week before I left for Dubai, I started wrapping up everything that had to be done, stayed up early into a few mornings, ACTUALLY did work in class and had a PDF report ready on my desktop 24 hours before my flight. This is the only reason I could enjoy my holiday, devour all the yummy Lebanese food and be in awe of Dubai. I prioritised and rewarded. After all, didn’t someone say ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’?
