After 4 months of preparation, arguments, several budget changes and last minute designer drop-outs, my class successfully pulled off what my teacher later referred to as, “A great show that as far as I am concerned made Raffles & Singapore fashion history.”
The event was going to showcase the collections of three designers, with a dance performance as a filler and end with a memorable grand finale. I chose to step out of my comfort zone of marketing and styling and volunteered to be a part of the production team for this David Bowie inspired fashion show.

My responsibilities ranged from selecting the most appropriate caterer and finalising the menu, to planning and executing the decor to fit the theme of the event. I also pitched in choreography ideas (having some fair knowledge from my stint on the ramp during college days) and delegated tasks to the rest of my team members.
On the day of the show, after setting up the event and F&B halls, I took my position as the model queuer- a job that seemed fairly easy but important. I understood that timing was key, and rehearsed a code hand gesture with my peer to help me gauge when to send out the next model- there was no screen backstage so this had to be done. Everything was set and I was ready. The show started and everything went smoothly until it was time for the second designer’s collection and I realised that not all the models had changed into their garments. I panicked and ran from behind the curtains to the DJ dock where my friend was stationed, and told her to do something to buy us a few more minutes and then quickly ran back and informed the dressers to hurry up while the audience expectingly sat in silence staring at the curtains with their phones ready to Instagram away. My friend played a video which she had saved for a later point and saved this awkward hiccup from growing into a flaw in the show, while I took a deep breath and kept the first model on stand by.
The rest of the show went smoothly and received great reviews from the audience including the likes of Daniel Boey and representatives from Harpers Bazaar.
Stay tuned. Stay inspired.
