I attended the earth fest recently and had a lot of takeaways from the event. The thought of wanting to make a difference but not knowing where to start may be overwhelming, so here’s a listicle with some direction and things you may not know.

1. Start conversations about the environment

  • Ask questions and listen

  • Share what climate change means to you

  • Share the action you’re taking (and why it matters)

  • Share a positive vision

2. Know your plastics

  • Refuse and reduce the use of plastics that aren’t commonly recyclable like takeaway packaging, disposable straws etc.

  • Recycle the type of plastic that can be recycled like plastic egg carton and milk jugs.

  • Vote with your wallets - buy from companies that use recycled content.

  • Don’t ditch anything, find sustainable alternatives instead.

3. Eat your way into a better world

  • Food doesn’t get manufactured the same way it used to. The way that we are living isn’t sustainable and its difficult today to feign a lack of understanding around this topic because of its impacts.

  • We kill a 100 billion land based animals per year and 2.5 trillion fish and 80% of the earth’s oceans are empty. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, wildlife extinction and a leading cause of climate change, water droughts. It takes less water to produce a year’s food for a vegan than for a month for a meat eater. Make the connection.

  • WHO classified processed meat as carcinogenic. It is not in our instincts to eat animals and our digestive tracks are similar to that of frugivores, not omnivores.

  • We need a plant based revolution to be more forward thinking and realise our choices aren’t personal and have a greater impact.
