I remember the night I discovered Rupi Kaur. I had just returned from what seemed like a never ending day in college and chose to skip dinner and roll myself in my blanket instead. While scrolling through my Youtube feed in the hopes of finding something to put me to sleep, I found a TED video with an Indian woman in the thumbnail titled “Im taking my body back”- what followed in the next 19 minutes was a combination of tears and vulnerability.
I’ve never dived into poetry apart from the occasional google search-“Rumi love quotes” to use in cards and letters but Rupi’s work was the perfect ice breaker to change this. Her writing style is simplistic and raw and her books Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers threw me into an ocean of emotions leaving me feeling nostalgic and hopeful.
I watched her bring her words to life at the Bangalore Literary Festival and it’s safe to say that this “insta-poet” is here to stay (atleast in my bookshelf).
